The Harrisville Lions Club was chartered by Lions International on June 5, 1940, the Charter was issued June 18, 1940. The Club has well and faithfully served the greater Harrisville community of approximately 1,500 in its 40-plus years of existence.

Each year Harrisville Lions raise some seven to eight thousand dollars by way of several major fund-raising projects — The Labor Day Harmony Weekend chuck-wagon hot dog and pop sales (the 2nd largest Michigan arts & crafts fair); the Duck Race held on the weekend of July 4th, the White Cane Appeal, a Silent Auction and December Wine Tasting Event.

Funds raised from these projects go to support Lions International sight, hearing and diabetes related programs. In addition, proceeds also support the following community projects:

INFANT & TODDLER PHOTO EYE SCREENING

What is an MTI Photo screener?

MTI Photo screening uses a specialized Polaroid type camera that takes instant photos of infant and toddlers eyes. When read by a trained and qualified person, the photos can screen for major eye disorders including near and far sightedness, astigmatism, anisometropia (unequal prescription), cataracts and strabismus (turned eye). Research also shows that approximately one out of every 20 children between the ages of six months and five years has a serious eye disorder. Most children in this age group either never have their vision checked or they’re tested with a method that often fails to detect some serious eye problems. By the time children enter school and do have their eyes tested it may be harder and costlier to provide effective treatment.

Mio Lions have a camera and have been very active in screening youngsters in District 11-E2.
